HELP POOR KIDS:
PROVIDE SCHOOL SUPPLIES

The Salvation Army and the 11 Shopko stores in Nebraska are collecting new school supplies to distribute to needy children as the 2006-07 school year gets under way. The goal is to distribute 9,000 backpacks filled with items donated by area residents and businesses. Purchase items and leave in the collection bins at Shopko until Aug. 12, and take supplies to the Salvation Army, any branch of the First National Bank of Omaha, any Gordman’s store, or the west entrance of the Nebraska Furniture Mart until Aug. 11.

The Open Door Mission also has plans to distribute about 2,000 filled backpacks by the end of the summer. That agency knows better than most how important education is; 60% of the adults who come to the mission dropped out before the sixth grade. Donate supplies at any metro-area Hy-Vee or any Great Western Bank branch until Aug. 16.

FirstComp Insurance is sponsoring “Stuff the Bus” on Aug. 14 and 15 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Bring school supplies, backpacks, nonperishable food, and new or gently-used children’s clothing to the purple bus at 222 S. 15th St.
